The FCC defines broadband as a minimum of 25 Mbps download and 3 Mbps upload. For most households, 100 Mbps is comfortable for streaming, video calls, and remote work. For 4K streaming or multiple simultaneous users, 200–500 Mbps is recommended. Gigabit (1,000 Mbps) is ideal for power users and content creators.
Ping (latency) measures the round-trip time for data to travel from your device to a server and back, measured in milliseconds (ms). Lower is better. Under 20ms is ideal for online gaming. Under 50ms is good for HD video calls. Under 100ms is acceptable for general browsing. High ping causes visible lag, buffering, and choppy calls.
Your plan speed is a maximum, not a guarantee. Common reasons for lower results include:
  • Wi-Fi signal loss between router and device
  • Network congestion during peak hours
  • Old or low-quality router hardware
  • Too many devices sharing your connection
  • Background apps and updates using bandwidth
  • VPN usage adding overhead

Test with a wired Ethernet cable to get the closest reading to your true plan speed.

Jitter is the variation in your ping over time. Even if your average ping is low, high jitter causes choppy video calls, VoIP dropouts, and gaming lag spikes because data packets arrive unevenly. For Zoom, Teams, or Discord, keep jitter under 10ms. Values above 30ms will cause noticeable audio/video quality issues.
This test uses OpenSpeedTest, which connects to multiple global server nodes. Results reflect real-time network conditions at the moment of testing. For the most accurate result: close all other browser tabs, pause downloads or updates, and ideally use a wired connection. Running 2–3 tests and averaging the results also improves accuracy.
